Church of England apologizes to Charles Darwin for rejecting evolution

From telegraph.co.uk, September 2008: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/religion/2910447/Charles-Darwin-to-receive-apology-from-the-Church-of-England-for-rejecting-evolution.html

"The apology, which has been written by the Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, the Church's director of mission and public affairs, says that Christians, in their response to Darwin's theory of natural selection, repeated the mistakes they made in doubting Galileo's astronomy in the 17th century."

I thought that this was interesting since it seems to be something that will never happen in America!!

  1. I found this amusing because Im not even sure why the Church of England would issue an apology. In the Church's official statement it says, ",the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and,... encouraging other to misunderstand you still." I wouldn't call the debate between evolution and creationism a misunderstanding when the two sides are taking completely different stances that cannot overlap. Also, I'm certain that the Church is going to continue to support and spread the idea of creationism, so I feel their apology really has no merit. In my opinion their apology would make more sense if the Church was going to accept the theory of evolution over creationism, but I don't see that happening any time soon.

  2. Yeah def, the apology seems to be a (slightly fruity) PR gesture to try and separate it from the fundamentalists who make the Church of England look irrational and uneducated. I think it's understood that it's not a real apology given that Darwin's been dead for so about two centuries and nobody really cares anymore since, for the most part, everyone except the crazies accepts evolution.
