E.O. Wilson and James Watson on Charles Darwin

A very accessible Charlie Rose interview about Darwin
between one of the co-discoverers of the structure of DNA, James Watson, and the famous sociobiologist E.O. Wilson.

  1. A very interesting video both in the lively, eccentric banter between Wilson, Watson and Rose and in the discussion of how wildy relevent/accurate Darwin's work is today despite the lack of scientific technology he had at his disposal in his lifetime. Some memorable quotes regarding Darwin:

"In my mind Darwin was the most important person who ever lived on earth" - James Watson

"The man was always right"- E.O. Wilson

"If you say truth comes from observation and experience not revelation...then Darwin was really the first person to put man in his place in the world"- Watson

Another intriguing part of the conversation is towards the end when Watson is discussing the idea of genetics' role in human violence. While his comments on how he believes the human species is, out of necessity, evolving into a less violent species as the human community of interdependence grows are uplifting and optimistic, his insinuations regarding the penal system is less cheerful. Watson leaves the viewer, if you except his premise that violence stems from genetics not social conditions, with with the rather gloomy question: "How do you have a just society when genetics is injust?"
